evaluation task 1
In what ways does your media product use ,develop or challenge forms of conventions from real media products
Frame 1- production company logo

My first frame of analysis is the frame that shows our production company logo. This is the logo that represents us as a company and is a key part of the trailer because the very look of the logo shows what the mood of the trailer, but big established companies don`t have to change their logos because they are well known such as paramount. As it was our first film we decided to suit the logo to the film and also with the name as well. Nightfall gives the impression of nighttime and all that happens at night which is where most of our action happens in our film . The lighting in the logo is very sinister , the single street light is beaming down onto a single spot and the street looks very dark and eerie, this transcends into our film because there are very similar scenes and are very common in other thriller films.

Fame 2 - Introduction of the antagonist

This frame is the first time you see the antagonist and it is also where you her his voice over as well which gives a deep insight into the character and what his motives might be .It is a low angle looking up and the character this shows is is powerful and is very important , which is true because he exercise power and dominance in every part of the film and everything he does and is the main character in the film , The character is wearing all black as well to show his dark personality and intentions. It is also in a church and he is confessing his sins and asking for forgiveness but is also asking why he was chosen to have such a tough childhood and he feels like he needs to make up for the lack of love and attention he was neglected as a child which is the story line of the film . The neglected child is common in thriller but they dont usually try to have relationships with the victims instead hurt or kill them because of their trauma , therefore our film complies to some parts of thriller stereotypes but then adds a unique twist. We left the character face and identity a secret to keep the audience interested and guessing and allows them to keep it open instead of labeling him because of his ethnicity or class , they just focus on his actions and what causes them , this is similar to kiss the girls where the `collector` wears a mask so you cannot see his identity and only in the last act of the film do you see who he really is .There is a effect straight after that blurs the screen and leaves a ripple and looks like a dream sequence and along with the voice over it almost feels like you're inside the character mind which deepens the connection with the character and the audience.

Frame 3 - Intro of the plot
The third frame is a mid shot of the police board that has information about the cases. The board looks well used and not like its fresh as too say that it is a common occurrence for people to go missing in the area which shows it might be rough area. Props like this are very common in crime thrillers because they are used by the police ion real life so it makes the films more realistic. We did a black and white effect on this scene because it resembles a flash back so it shows the police might have dealt with cases similar before so it isn't the first victim . the board also gives an insight into what might happen if the victims dont comply so it gives suspense to see chat the girls will do and if he will keep them or not.
Frme 4 - knife
This frame is a close up of an action taken out by a character that has just had terrible news that her daughter has been kidnapped . in the clip she is informed of what happened and the drops the knife is disbelieve.we got another close up of when the knife hit the floor just like in the kiss the girls trailer however ares has meaning behind it and isn't just to build suspense in the trailer it is a vital point in the plot .the fact she drops the knife shows how much she is in shock because she cant control what she is doing ,the audience would also feel sympathetic to the mother because they wouldn't want it to happen to them either.
Frame 5 - settings and effects

This frame is establishing shot of the location Rosie is taken to , we found this location by accident while driving and thought it looked the part so decided to film it , we added a slight blur as if it was through Rosies eyes as she is slowly drifting in and out of consciousness and hence the black and white because she was recently knocked out and is only just coming back , the shot doesn't give too much bout the location away they can just see it is a farm but have no idea where it is or of he owns it or has stolen it. Not many films give away the captives location but we wanted to change it up a bit and give the audience ab it of dramatic irony with knowing where she is but not being able to do anything about it .
frame 6 titles

The sixth frame is our titles and what they mean , the titles we have go along with the story of the film and characters backgrounds , " everybody wants to be loved" is a statement that work with the emotional trauma of the main character and what he went through and why he does what he does . Titles are often used in films for actors names such as in trailers like se7en and kiss the girls , we did the same and used the titles to show the actors names.the love me title is effective because it short and memorable therefore it will stick in audiences minds as it is almost like a demand and will play on their emotions. The concept of love me isn't stereotypical to thriller films either , most kidnappers try to hurt or kill their captures but our character just wants them to love him hence the name of the film.
Fame 7 shot type / angle

For this frame I m using my favorite shot from the whole trailer , a canted shit that is purposely out of focus. with the camera we had we could choose the point of focus so we focused on the foreground so the kidnapping in the background is blurred out and looks even more scary because it adds to the effect of not knowing what is going on this is backed up by the canted shot because this shot is used to show confusion . The camera is actually the pov of the other girl Danielle , this is why it is blurry because she was just pushed over by the antagonist so it is her point of view from the floor and how helpless she is .
frame 8 film poster
My magazine cover was crested to advertise my film . it is based on other thriller covers such as inception . The main image is the antagonist in the middle of the cover with an emotionless expression his face to fit the stereotype of a heartless character , however the name of the film is a binary opposite because love is the strongest emotion and he just wants to feel loved , which intrigues the audience into watching the film to experience the clash of emotions . I also included other films in the cover to fill up space on the cover and to make it so there are other things to look and and to make it seem like a proper magazine cover. I used the name "final cut " as it is a common film term but also fits a magazine name well because the final cut of film is the best product they could make so this indicates its the best magazine out there . I chose to not put the image over the title because it thought it would make it look worse and this is common on magazine covers when the image is very large and they can afford to cover it because their magazine is so well known even when covered people would know what it is.The smokiness represents the confusion about what could happen in the film because it leaves the view obscured and also gives a very eerie look to the whole cover.
, With knock knock the three images are of different points on characters faces not different points in the film . This isn't common in thriller posters because they tend to not give much away however mine gives three key points in the film but you'd only realise if you saw the film which is just another way i tried to make my products unique. I kept the identity of the antagonist still a mystery so the audience is still intrigued to find out who they are . Love me the title is in a shade of red that i colour corrected from the sunset because red is the colour of love but also associated with hate which is a binary opposite just like the one in our actual film. Lastly i used a convention of reviews on the poster and having the text at the bottom with the specific font that is on every movie poster , the reviews are from popular newspapers so readers of them will go and see the film because they know they can trust the review.

Frame 9 film poster
The final frame is the poster i made for my film. the poster is set out with three images horizontally on top of each other , all three photos represents a different chapter in the film .Then there is reviews between the gap of two photos .the bottom photo is of the main character looking over the sunset waiting for nightfall and it is filled with vibrant oranges and reds from the sun and that represents the peace at the start of the film because of the colours and the mood of the photo . Then the second image is a shot of the place where Rosie is kept in the film and is in a lighter grey to show things have just got darker and she has been captured and how the equilibrium is now off balance . The final image is a dark black image with rosies face light up but you can only see her eyes but you can see the emotion filled up within them because it is a point in the film where she is tied up and is very scared . Therefore the three colour switches represent rosies emotions through the chapters .This layout of a poster is similar to the poster for "knock knock" so i took inspiration from it but added my own twist

Evaluation task 2
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
In my media production and other texts , I tried to demonstrate key stereotypes in the crime thriller genre and take inspiration from other texts to successfully promote my materiel. I used similar fonts , images and effects throughout all three of my texts therefore they are all recognizable to audiences in my target audience of 16+, because then they are old enough to know it is only a film and isnt real so dont get scared but are also old enough to appreciate the film making elements in the film.
My magazine cover i chose to have the main antagonist on the front cover because i felt he is the most important character int the film because the films is based on his emotional struggle and is will to be loved by someone so i thought he would be the best because the story is about him . I dressed him in all black just like in the film because it represents his emotionless state he is in and that he is in a dark place mentally and needs help as well as the blank face that he pulls as well to further show he has no emotion. I also used smoke on the background to cover the image a bit to show he is always hiding and is always in the dark .
The same outfit can be seen on the antagonist in the poster as well as the trailer itself , we used the same outfit because it is perfect for his personality so we didn't want him trying on different costumes in the film because then you wouldn't know it was him.
I only showed a brief bit of rosie in my poster and not in my magazine cover this is because i didn't want to give too much away of the situations that she is in in the film .This means there isnt a relationship suggested at first but because of the nature of the film and the plot we had come up with further down the line in the film she ends up falling for him but we didn't want to give it away.
In my research i looked at other films texts such as posters and trailers , I found that actors names are always on the posters for the films and so re reviews and then on magazine covers there is mostly bits about the production of the film or interviews with cast or directors, therefore i applied that to my cover and poster .
I used similar effects on my poster and cover , the effects were to do with the fonts and how they looked , instead of having plain block fonts i added effects to them to make the look more professional and i saw it on other covers and posters therefore the fonts show synergy between my texts. The pose that the antagonist is doing is slightly different in both the cover and the poster because in the poster he is turning away and it is a mid shot where as the cover he is facing the camera and it is a close up , there is no real reason for this its just how it came out.
I emphasized conventions such as big bold text and eerie photos in my cover and poster and also with the use of dark colours to fit the mood of the genre . Our production company name also fits into the thriller genre as it is called nightfall , and the films age rating is common among thrillers (15).
In evaluation i believe that all 3 of my texts depict exactly how i wanted to portray my product and still fit to many thriller conventions so dont go to far out the box but still try to be unique. All texts will engage all of out target audience as well as other audience member that might want to see the film . We also will have the help of social media to promote the film to reach a even bigger audience

evaluation task 3
Evaluation task 3 – what have you learnt from your audience feedback?
We had a lot of feedback for our trailer in its many different stages , most of it was positive but there was always ways we could improve and when the feedback was negative it only pushed us to create the best product we could and make the needed adjustments . I had feedback from teachers, parents, friends, family friends and work colleges.
Trailer
Positive feedback
Great variety of locations – we were complimented on the use of many different locations, this made it look more authentic because it isn’t just based in one location ,Instead we have many locations making it look like a real story line.
Voice over – we used a voice over of the antagonist in the beginning of the trailer and many people liked it because they found it to be very menacing and creepy and it was a great addition for the trailer.
Camera shots and angles- many people mainly students and teachers liked the variety of shoots and angles we used in our production to really capture the atmosphere and emotions. The reason this feedback was teachers and other student is because they know to look out for it where as general public don’t look out for those sorts of things because they don’t know how they affect the scene.
Background music- we used a fast paced back track in the second half of the trailer which worked perfectly with the pacing and the mood of the trailer.
Editing – Most people appreciated the two stages of the trailer and liked the way the switched pace and almost shocked them with the sudden change . They also liked the use of effects such as black and white.
The ending of the trailer – a lot of positive feedback was given to our last scene in the trailer when Rosie is dragged back and then it goes black and silent, hey said it is very suspenseful and really grabbed their full attention
Negative feedback
Too much of a story- our first draft was criticized on being too much like a story and felt more like a short film then a trailer
Lack of visual effects- our first draft was very lacking in any effects therefore it looked very plain and boring and didn't fit the tone for a thriller trailer
Lack of sound- In the first draft there was very little range of sounds both digetic and non , so we added more sound types.
Poor editing- our first draft was very basic and lacked suspense and had very little impact on the audience
Addition of voice over- we used a voice over from one of the characters to help develop the backstory and main plot line .
change of titles- The titles were to long winded and didn't have the snap effect we wanted them to have.
stage 1
The first thing the teachers told us after watching our first draft was the lack of effects and poor flow of the trailer in general, therefore we went back and looked at how we could add effects to make it look more like a thriller , this included playing with different colour effects to make clips darker and more sinister looking ,fades to black to make it more fluent and other transitions to also helps it flow and make it look more professional. An example was in our first draft the opening shot was of a church in day light the shot was shaky, therefore we changed the colours to make it a lot darker and cropped down the frame so it was focused on one point, this gave it a much more better looking shot and even gave it more meaning because the shot showed the clock tower so it was almost hinting that the time is up. We also added a clip with the antagonist inside the church after and to add more insight to the characters life and backstory.
The second thing the teachers picked up on is the age of one of the actors. Aaron played the detective on the case that goes to Rosie's house and informs her family of her kidnap. He looked too young to be a detective even with good costume and if we had kept him it would have bought down the realism of our production. Therefore we swapped him with a older man, George, This meant all the character looked more realistic and made sure it didn't just look like a a bunch of young lads pretending to be detectives and villains
The titles in our production we also a point that needed to be changed as some were too long winded and and were slightly confusing .For example the titles that said “Some are not destined to be” and “For others there is no choice” to “Love may be for some…” and “But not for all”" and changed them to shorter titles that captivate the audiences attention more , because they can read them clearly in the time they appear for and they are short and snappy so you remember them. These titles were easier to understand as well therefore people understood the trailer much more and gave more of an insight into the story because it is clear what they are referring to.
The ending of our trailer also had some criticisms. Our teachers said it ended to suddenly and it lacked any suspense which meant it was a very poor ending because it didn't grab the audiences attention like the ending should , it is usually the main thing they remember because it is so significant . Therefore we had a choice to add more layers to the current ending such as sound of effects or make a new one , we went for mix of both by using our current one but switching it slightly. We made a voice over of the antagonist saying "love me " and we used a effect to deepen the voice
to make it sound very chilling and almost send goosebumps up the audiences neck, and then shortly after we used a scream from the protagonist to add the final chilling moment in the trailer and really set the audience on edge , this can also be interpreted as a conversation between the characters as well because of the demand and the response , which gives an insight to the on going battle in the film of the struggle of both the protagonist and the antagonist. The scream also provided a final point in the trailer and captivated the audiences attention and gave it the dramatic ending it needed while also building the suspense before hand with the correct effects and music .
The final changes made to our trailer was the addition of discontinuity . Our first draft was said to be very short film like and told too much of a story. in addition it revealed a lot of key plots points already so spoil the film .Therefore we added more scenes such as establish shots , close ups and mid shots . the introduction of these shots gave the audience more to focus on and also gave more of back story into the lives of the characters therefore the use of these flash backs and views on their lives, this meant the trailer was full of discontinuity and no longer made the trailer look like a short film. These flashbacks also give a view of the detective trying to solve the previous crimes and shows how the plot will expand into the main film .
Film poster
Positive feedback
Good use of space- there is no blank space being wasted and the photos compensate each other well
good use of colour- the contrast of colour is a good representation of the progression of the story
good layout- the layout of the pictures and font compensates each other well and nothing is too big or small
Criticisms
first draft was too bright- the colour on the first draft was too bright
lack of content- the first draft was very basic and laced much content on it
Reviews- the reviews were too big and took up too much space
The first change I made was layout and the content of my poster. At first all I had was one picture at the bottom and a small title with a review at the top , therefore I chose to add two different pictures and bend them together so it flowed through the whole poster and didn't have any sharp edges that look unprofessional. I then made the review smaller and placed it in a better place so it didn't disrupt the flow as much as it did .
My second change was to change the brightness of the colours in my poster , however I opted to change two of the three bright ones instead , because the three stages of brightness represent the stages in the film ,the first picture is colourfull and represents the equilibrium in the beginning of the film and the balance. and then the pictures get progressively darker to represent how the films balance is disrupted and becomes in disequilibrium .
My final change was the colurs on the poster , after I changed my pictures I also changed the other colurs such as the colour of the font , I changed it to the colour that is in the sunset because it is red which is the colour of love , Then it contradicts with all the dark grey and black in the poster because black is associated with death and pain which is similar to the films plot.
Magazine cover
Nice layout - everything is well laid out and in proportions
Good use of fonts- A good variety of fonts used
Creative background- the background is very unique
Criticisms
DVD cover - at first it looked like a DVD cover
very basic- it was very basic at first
image- the image was too small and didn't look right
Firstly on my first draft i was very inexperienced and my product came out very poorly with small titles and very poor layout . it looked more like a DVD cover so I had to completely re think my design and make a new one , I made the titles a lot bigger and changed the fonts to make it look more like a magazine and added more magazine aspects like a header and bar code.
The main picture was very small and didn't fit the style of a magazine cover therefore I went for a more central image that would captivate audiences and that was easier tow work around , this meant I had more space to use creative fonts and to show off more of my background I created .
Lastly I used effects on some of the fonts to make them more professional looking and not just plain and boring , this gave my cover a more overall professional look and it fit in with the background and everything else .
We had a lot of feedback for our trailer in its many different stages , most of it was positive but there was always ways we could improve and when the feedback was negative it only pushed us to create the best product we could and make the needed adjustments .
Lastly I used effects on some of the fonts to make them more professional looking and not just plain and boring , this gave my cover a more overall professional look and it fit in with the background and everything else .

evaluation 4
How did you use new media technologies in the construction , research , planning and evaluation stages
Canon DSLR camera
A vital new media component technology that we used in our production. We got the camera from the school arts department and we took it out multiple times to film over the weekends because they needed it during the week .Because of the quality of the camera it meant the quality of the footage looked more professional . it also meant we could frame shots exactly how we wanted such as the shot where Rosie gets kidnapped we canted the shot and we managed to put it out of focus and add the confusion in the scene . Paired with a tripod the shots are dead still and the camera can move freely on an axis as well so tracking shots are easy as well , it also helped us keep the camera reasonable steady while moving with it while recording. We varied the amount of shots with the camera because we wanted to utilize all its capabilities such as being able to change lens to get different angles and shot types . For example we used the long distance lens to get establishing shots that are clearer because we didn't have to zoom in and distort the shot.

Photoshop
I was very inexperienced when I started using Photoshop therefore it took me a few attempts at testing out effects and tools to get the hang of it.However I able to use it to create a movie poster and a magazine cover for our film . I had also used it at AS as well so I had some previous experience with the software. I used tools such as the magic wand tool to crop a photo to put on my magazine cover and then the eraser tool with a dimmed down effect to blend photos in with backgrounds. I had the chance to change the style and effects of fonts with tools such as gradient and inner/outer glow, these tools changed how the text looked and allowed my titles to look more professional because they weren't just basic block titles.Without Photoshop my poster and magazine wouldn't have been possible or if they were possible to make elsewhere they would have looked very basic and not up to standard.

Apple Iphone
My iPhone was used in all aspects of production , it was used to take photos of locations for other tasks on the blog ,and for the image on my magazine cover . It also allowed me to access the internet while out and about filming and let me show my team ideas from other trailers such as a knife drop from kiss the girls , so it gave us creative inspiration as well. As well as being how we organised the whole schedule and meeting times, it was our source of communication between the team and the actress we bought in. The last feature we used was the voice recording to get voice overs from two characters which we could transfer straight over.

imac and imovie
Every bit of editing for our trailer was done on a imac using the software imovie. We chose to use this software because it meant we could edit anywhere because the imac is a laptop and can be taken anywhere so we weren't limited to computers within school. We had also used it the year before so we were familiar with it so we knew what we were doing, It is a user friendly software but without reducing quality therefore we were able to get the exact product we wanted without being confused by the editing like on other software. It allowed to use effects such as changing the colour saturation and contrast and use transitions to helped it flow better and look more professional .We also accessed the music and sounds library to get the right musics and sound effects needed to add to the effect of the trailer and to make it look and feel more like a thriller genre trailer, The cutting tool allowed to cut and trim clips we had filmed to get exactly what we wanted from clip without having to use pointless footage that didn't need to be in the trailer .

Blogger
Blogger was the website we used to upload our work to and create a blog to showcase all our work . It was vert simple to use and reliable at most times however I did come into a few problems along the way such as not being able to access certain areas at school due to blocks and losing multiple Pieces of work that i had to do gain which was annoying .I could access it on my phone as well which was good and convenient. It also allowed teachers to comment on our posts and give us feedback.

Facebook/twitter
I used Facebook to create a page to promote our film so more people would know about it .Twitter was used to get actors for the film and organised how we would get them to us because they lived 30 minutes drive from us .
YouTube
I use YouTube a lot and always watch content posted on there , so I was very familiar with it.I had also used it to post my AS film on there too .It helped me research other film trailers to give me creative inspiration. I used it to post my A2 film and my film pitch on , these could be vieewd by evryone so it was easy access for our teachers.

props
Each prop used in our production was well thought out and only used if we thought it would make the scene better and not just used for the sake of it so each prop has a meaning or a story behind linked to one of the characters backstory . Also the audience are used to seeing weapons so we wanted to show that the character really does love his captive and use no weapons and pointless props.

The candle is a very significant prop in the trailer because it is used in the scene at the dinner table when the antagonist has prepared a romantic dinner for his captive . It is almost an oxymoron because the candle signifies romance but at the same time there is a girl tied up in distress right behind it, and love and hate are opposites.

We used rope , a chair and tape when he first held Rosie captive . This is because at first she is being held against her will but as the film goes on she trusts the antagonist more and more and no longer needs the restraints and near the end of the film she falls in love with him.

police board- we made this out of an old map and used photos of characters to make it authentic and then used string and pen to make it look even more like a real police board . it was put in the start to give a small backstory into the whole film and the missing persons .

Black ford fiesta - we used this as the getaway car when the kidnap happened, we had to use this to add continuity to the film because it would be unrealistic he could transport a live person on foot this also has another link , the antagonist is clearly older because he can drive and the victims are walking so the cannot drive .

Costumes
It was very important to get the outfits for the characters correct because it adds to the realness of the production . We chose to have the girls in everyday clothes just to show that for them it was just like any other day and it was nothing special. The antagonist needed clothes that would hide his identity and help him blend in as well.
Henry - antagonist
long black coat
black trousers
black converse
black jeans
Shania-Rosie
black jeans
black converse
white coat - this signifies her as important because it makes her stand out more
Aaron - detective
long overcoat - typical detective attrie
glasses
shirt

age rating
The BBFC states that there are contributing factors that make a film a film a 15 rating, these included violence, nudity or garphic content. However our film trailer we show no presence of any of them , we do though have abduction which is a very sensitive subject and not something you see in PG 12 and below films therefore i feel as a 15 rating would be more appropriate for our film . We chose not to have violence because the while plot of our story is that the antagonist is trying to get the girl to love him so he would never intentionally hurt her.
script
St Joseph’s Catholic Church – Day 3, filming inside Church, Henry on seat and stood with arms wide
HENRY
They don’t understand, they never have but they soon will. I will put an end to this and one way or another they will learn to LOVE ME.
Henry’s house – Day 3, filming inside Henry’s house of Aaron talking to family members
AARON
Is your mother home?
We have reason to believe your daughter has been kidnapped.
A1 motorway – Day 1, Isa voiceover with Henry looking into distance
ISA
All I remember is him pushing me over and everything was a blur, he’s taken her.
Henry’s house – Day 2&3, close up of Shania with her being dragged back
SHANIA
Diegetic sounds, heavy breathing and screaming
"They don’t understand, they never have but they soon will. I will put an end to this and one way or another they will learn to LOVE ME."
"They don’t understand, they never have but they soon will. I will put an end to this and one way or another they will learn to LOVE ME."
We used this voiceover with the backing of the church to create an asynchronous effect and place further emphasis on the dialogue. This is in the first shot of the trailer and creates immediate tension for an audience and present the antagonist in a dark way.
"Is your mother home?"
"We have reason to believe your daughter has been kidnapped."
The inclusion of Henry's younger sister to play the role of Rosey's sister was key in this scene because it shows that the impacts of the kidnapping would effect all members of her family and friends. This highlights the importance of the kidnapping to the plot and immediately presents Rosey's family as protagonists who want their daughter back.

"All I remember is him pushing me over and everything was a blur, he's taken her."
This is key dialogue because it is from Daniella, the only witness of the crime. Her not being able to remember much about the kidnapper places further doubt into the minds of the audience about Rosey being found.
This diegetic sound of the breathing and screaming symbolises Rosey's desperation to escape from her captor. This means that the audience sympathise with Rosey and promotes hostility towards the antagonist, who refuses to let her free.
